Kilted to Kick Cancer: Day 6

Originally, I had planned a day at the lake on the jet ski, but bad weather changed those plans, so today is housekeeping day.

Kilted With Shine

As of 11:00 CST yesterday, my total in the fundraising challenge was $150, neck and neck with Team McThag and Team Borepatch for third place. Donations overall were $1530.

That’s good, but we’d like it to be much better. I know that we’re heading into a major fundraising push on the heels of the ALS Icebucket Challenge, and many of you already donated to that campaign. For that, I thank you. It is a worthy cause, one to which I have also donated.

But also consider this:

  • 5,000 people in the United States will be diagnosed with ALS this year. 233,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer.
  • 20,000-30,000 people in the United States have ALS. 2.5 million men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer.
  • 2 in 100,000 people die from ALS in the United States every year. That’s a little over 6,000 deaths a year. 1 in 36 men will die of prostate cancer. It kills nearly 30,000 men a year. That’s six times as many men as ALS kills men and women. That’s well over 500 men, each week, every week.
  • 1 man in 7 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer within their lifetime.

I know you may be weary of giving. I know the economy still sucks. I know times are hard. But I’m still asking you to give, because it’s important.

I started this fundraising challenge because I wanted the campaign Happy Medic and Motorcop started to be more than some feel-good, awareness campaign. I wanted to raise real money, to be dedicated to male-specific cancer research.

We’ve done that, to the tune of $53,000 in only 90 days of fundraising over the past three years, all of it funneled to A-rated cancer charities. Along the way, we became a 501(c)3 charity in our own right, and the vast majority of your donations to Kilted to Kick Cancer this year will go directly to cancer research.

Our board is unpaid. We’re all volunteers.

The seed money to file our 501(c)3 paperwork and pay the lawyers came out of the treasurer’s own pocket.

We have no huge advertising or fundraising budget. No huge PR machine. No celebrity spokespersons (although if you’re a celebrity and you want to pimp KTKC for free, we’ll not turn you down).

What you see is what you get: three bloggers, their wives, and a small but growing army of supporters from the EMS and shooting communities. As grassroots efforts go, we’re about as green as it gets.

And with your support, we’ve done a lot of good already.

But we could do so much more.

It doesn’t take much, and every little bit helps. Go to the Kilted to Kick Cancer donate page, and make a donation on behalf of Team Ambulance Driver.

Or hell, donate on behalf of someone else. I’m in this fundraising challenge for bragging rights only. My victory will come when we collectively raise more money than we did last year.

Thanks for your support, and remember…

Get Kilted, and get checked!
